Dale Moser knows his golf club stuff

Dale Moser, owner of Dale's Custom Clubs, Inc.

If you’d like to improve your golf game, Berkeley Springs golf clubmaker Dale Moser can create a set of irons uniquely suited to your swing and physical build.

Moser recently opened Dale’s Custom Clubs, a new business that he runs out of his home near Ca-capon State Park. Moser does custom golf clubmaking and clubfitting as well as golf club repairs, regripping, and reshafting.

Moser has been a golf clubmaker for six years and has been a member of the Professional Clubmakers’ Society since 2002. He is the only Certified “Class A” Clubmaker in West Virginia. Moser passed rigorous written and bench skills tests to earn that distinction. He has also attended seminars and received considerable training and on-the-job experience.

Moser has been a golfer all his adult life. He took up clubmaking as a hobby after attending a clubmaking school in Texas and started making and repairing clubs for himself and friends.

Moser decided that when he retired from corporate life that he would make his clubmaking a full-time business. Moser retired about a year ago and he and his wife Marilyn moved here in June.

Analyzes swing

At Dale’s Custom Clubs, Moser works with customers one-on-one to “figure out what is the best equipment for any given golfer.” In his fitting shop, Moser analyzes a golfer’s swing pattern, speed, tempo, and other swing characteristics through the use of a computer program that is hooked up to a golf tee.

Moser looks for whether their swing speed is fast or slow or whether they hit the ball straight or crooked. If the golfer tends to slice the ball to the left, a club face that tends to the left will help them hit the ball more squarely, he said.

Grip and shaft important

He also measures their height, wrist to ground distance, and hand size. It is important to ensure the club’s grip size is right for the hand size, he said. Moser can adjust the thickness of the grip to make sure it is comfortable in the hands of a golfer.

“Probably 80% of golfers are playing with a grip that is the wrong size,” said Moser.

Moser keeps a number of grips in his shop for customers to try. Grips can be smooth or rough for more traction, whatever feels best for the golfer.

“Feel is extremely important in golf. So much is feel and confidence in the equipment you’re using,” said Moser.

If a golfer had quick, rapid swing, Moser would give him a stiffer golf club shaft since they would be putting a lot of pressure on the club at that tempo.

Moser may give seniors and women lighter golf club shafts to compensate for lower swing speeds. Some seniors are still using the golf clubs they used when they played when they were in their 30’s and 40’s, but they may have lost swing speed, said Moser.

Loft and lie angles

One of the first things Moser does is measure the golfer’s current clubs for the loft and lie angles. That’s how the golf clubs sit on the ground and angle up to the golfer. Sometimes he finds the clubs are way too upright or too forward. “That may be contributing to their problems,” said Moser.

In his clubmaking shop, Moser selects the best club head, shaft, and grip to better a golfer’s swing.

Ready-made clubs from a store rack often don’t deliver a proper fit. Golfers may need heavier, longer, lighter, or shorter clubs, said Moser.

If equipment is the primary issue in their game, Moser can build a new set of clubs or make adjustments to their current clubs. If swing is the biggest problem, Moser will recommend that golfers spend time with a professional golf instructor to see if their swing can be improved.

“There is only so much that I can do with the equipment,” said Moser.

Year-round

Swing analysis can be done at Moser’s shop year-round at his computerized golf tee and indoor putting green. If Moser and his customer want to see the ball’s flight, they can head to the Cacapon State Park golf course, which is only minutes away. Moser enjoys his work as a clubmaker.

“The real thrill of doing what I do is the thrill of seeing a golfer improve his performance on the golf course and enjoy his golf game more,” said Moser.

To those who think their golf game could benefit by customized golf clubs, Moser said, “Come in. We’ll talk about your game and what kinds of problems you have on the golf course. We’ll look at your equipment and talk about changes that might be of benefit to use.”
